“I am breaking into a cold sweat–literally–at the thought of speaking in public.”
Larry O. NJ asks: “I have been asked to make a presentation at our corporate sales conference in September, and I am breaking into a cold sweat–literally– at the thought of speaking in public. I want to pull out but know that will be a career-limiting move.”

Let’s look at this another way Larry. This is your big moment man. You get the chance to shine! Now I’m guessing they didn’t ask you to speak because they wanted to have a good laugh at your expense. They asked you to take your place on that podium because they knew you were a man with something to say! A man who other folks would listen to. A man who’s already won respect. So prove ‘em right Larry. When you get up there know that those guys in the audience are ALREADY on your side. They want you to win. On a practical level, go take some personal yoga or meditation classes. Explain to the instructor that you need to gain some inner calmness and tranquility. She will show you how to breathe slowly and deeply–one of the best antidotes to fear I know. Larry- you’ll knock ‘em dead. Treat it like the celebration among friends that it will be. Work that stage man!

First off Larry, you are not alone in having this fear. In fact fear of speaking publicly ranks up there with finding yourself in a public place with no pants on. The very thought as you say, brings you out in a cold sweat. There are a lot of organizations out there who can help you. I suggest you contact your local chapter of Toastmasters. (www.toastmasters.com). Even if they don’t have any sessions going on, they’ll be able to direct you to some speaking coaches…
